The Gospel Coalition Conference – Plenary Sessions

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

There are only two more sessions left for The Gospel Coalition 2009 National Conference. Barton and I have been greatly fed by the amazing preaching and the fellowship with other like-minded pastors. To our church family, thank you for allowing us this opportunity.

They have made available the audio/video of the plenary sessions. I’d recommend watching Keller’s talk and Piper’s.

Job (as in the book/man) Conference – Messages

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

John Piper just finished speaking at a Desiring God Regional Conference in Austin, TX. The theme was on suffering.

Job: When the Righteous Suffer, Part 1 (download audio)
Job: When the Righteous Suffer, Part 2 (download audio)
Job: When the Righteous Suffer, Q/A (download audio)

In the Q/A session, Piper addresses the following questions:

What language should we use to talk about God’s sovereignty over sin?
How much did the Holy Spirit have to do with Job’s ability to suffer well?
As an ancient believer, how was Job’s faith different than ours?
How could Satan come into God’s presence? Does he still?
Did God initiate the meeting with Satan?
How should we view Satan’s involvement in our lives?
What is involved in the worship that comes in the moments of deepest suffering?
Would it be wrong to express anger and frustration in these moments?
How do you lovingly speak the truth of God’s sovereignty to sufferers?
What does it mean to be righteous?
What does it mean for the righteous to suffer when there is none righteous before God?
How do we make sure our kids are prepared for suffering when our family has undergone so little?
What do you say to a couple who lost their infant and now God seems so far away?
How do I help my disabled child understand God’s sovereignty when she faces not just physical suffering, but emotional suffering because of continual ridicule?
What do you do for an unbelieving friend whose suffering is pushing her away from God?
What do you do when you can’t see God’s good purposes in suffering?

A bit of a bio on Mark:
Mark Cahill has a business degree from Auburn University, where he was an honorable mention Academic All-American in basketball (playing and road-tripping with Charles Barkley). After spending a few years in the business world, he surrendered his heart to Jesus Christ and asked God to place him where he could touch as many lives as possible. Within a year, he was teaching school. Although Mark planned to teach for the rest of his life, God moved him from teaching at a Christian high school to devoting a year to full-time evangelism. He then embarked on a speaking career. Mark speaks to over 25,000 people per year at churches, retreats, conferences, camps, etc., equipping and challenging the saved to go out and reach the lost. As one of his students noted, he’s still teaching, but in a much bigger classroom.
His true vocation is witnessing, whether at malls, music and art festivals, beaches, sporting events, bar sections of towns—wherever the lost can be found. Mark is the author of “One Thing You Can’t Do in Heaven” which has been translated into Russian, Chinese, Spanish, Romanian and is being translated into Nepalese, and One Heartbeat Away. Mark lives in Stone Mountain, Georgia.

reFocus Canada

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Barton, Angela, and I attended the reFocus 2008 Conference at Willingdon Church this week. The conference goal is to “unite Canadian pastors around a resurgent historical evangelicalism and equip them to preach the full counsel of God in an age of relativism.”

Check out the reFocus blog which includes extensive notes from the speaker sessions. We heard from Bruce Ware, Kent Hughes, David Short, D.A. Carson, and John Neufeld.
